Important Notice: Protect Your SIP Devices and Services
What You Need To Know
Compromised SIP devices can result in various issues, including:
- Toll Fraud: Unauthorized calls made from your account, leading to unexpected charges.
- Service Disruption: Your voice services may be interrupted or disabled.
- Data Breach: While less common for SIP directly, a compromised device could potentially be a gateway into your broader network if not properly segmented.
What You Need to Do – Your Due Diligence is Key
It is imperative that you take proactive steps to secure your SIP devices and infrastructure. We strongly recommend the following best practices:
- Strong, Unique Passwords: Ensure all SIP devices (IP phones, ATAs, PBXs, softphones) and associated portals use complex, unique passwords that are changed regularly. Avoid default credentials at all costs.
- Firewall and Network Security:
- Restrict Access: Limit SIP access to only trusted IP addresses or networks. Do not expose your SIP devices directly to the public internet unless absolutely necessary, and then only with robust security measures in place.
- Port Management: Close all unnecessary ports on your firewall. Only open ports that are essential for SIP communication (e.g., UDP 5060, 5061, and RTP ports).
- Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS): Implement and monitor IDS/IPS to detect and block suspicious activity.
- Regular Firmware and Software Updates: Keep all SIP device firmware and PBX/softswitch software updated to the latest versions. Manufacturers frequently release updates to patch security vulnerabilities.
- Disable Unused Features: Turn off any SIP features or services that are not actively being used, as these can present potential attack vectors.
- Monitor Call Detail Records (CDRs): Regularly review your CDRs for unusual call patterns, excessive call volumes, or calls to suspicious international destinations. Report any anomalies immediately.
- Employee Training: Educate your employees about the risks associated with unsecured devices and the importance of reporting suspicious activity.
Isolate SIP Devices: Whenever possible, segment your voice network from your main data network to contain any potential breaches.
While we maintain robust security measures on our network, the security of your on-premises or cloud-based SIP devices and configurations remains your responsibility. Proactive security measures are the most effective way to prevent unauthorized access and protect your services.
